Captain J. W. Block, a male officer of the Louisiana Department of Corrections, died on June 20, 1906, at the age of approximately 50 years old. He was shot and killed while on duty at the Angola State Prison saw mill. Captain Block was taken prisoner by three convicts who were attempting to escape from the prison. The convicts had surprised him and disarmed him before making their way towards the river. As they attempted their escape, Captain Block was shot by another guard.
