Christopher Chenault, a 54-year-old man, served as the town marshal in Rayville, Louisiana, and on the evening of June 17, 1910, he walked into a dispute that had already been smoldering for hours. A blacksmith was locked in an argument with his employer over the ownership of tools, and the tension had escalated to threats serious enough that the employer sent for the marshal to restore order.
