In the quiet setting of Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana, a routine attempt to apprehend a wanted man tragically escalated, resulting in the death of a dedicated law enforcement officer. On February 2, 1984, Deputy Sheriff Edward Toefield Jr., a 40-year-old male, was on duty when he encountered a suspect sought for a bank robbery in New Orleans and the rape of his own daughter.
The encounter took place at Hi-Ho Sam's Restaurant, located just south of Amite.
Deputy Toefield successfully placed the suspect, identified as Thomas Sparks Jr., under arrest and began to search him. In a sudden and violent turn of events, Sparks produced a handgun that he had concealed in his waistband and shot Deputy Toefield. The deputy sustained fatal injuries from the gunshot wound. Following the shooting, Sparks fled the scene, disappearing into the dense nearby woods, sparking an intensive manhunt by local and state authorities.
The search for Thomas Sparks Jr. concluded the day after the shooting. When confronted by a corrections officer involved in the manhunt, Sparks reportedly pointed his weapon at the officer. In response, he was shot, wounded, and subsequently taken into custody. The apprehension of Sparks marked the beginning of a long legal process. A grand jury in Tangipahoa Parish indicted him for first-degree murder on February 9, 1984.
On August 18, 1986, a jury found Thomas Sparks Jr. guilty of the first-degree murder of Deputy Edward Toefield Jr. The jury unanimously recommended a sentence of death. Sparks remained on death row for many years, but in October 2015, his sentence was reduced to life in prison, where he remains incarcerated. In a lasting tribute to his service and sacrifice, a portion of U.S. Highway 51 in Tangipahoa Parish was officially renamed the Deputy Ed Toefield Jr. Memorial Highway. Deputy Toefield was survived by his wife, son, and three daughters.
