On a tragic Friday, October 9, 2015, Quandell Robert Beard, a 34-year-old male, was killed in a double homicide in Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana. The violent incident also resulted in the death of 33-year-old Elliot Smith. Both men were victims of gun violence in what investigators later determined to be a crime connected to a drug trafficking operation.
The investigation into the murders of Beard and Smith involved the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office, the Drug Enforcement
Administration, and the Hammond Police Department. Their collaborative efforts led to the identification and arrest of several suspects. Three men, Don Raines, 34, Travon Pitts, 28, and Baron Smith, 36, were initially charged in connection with the killings. Raines and Pitts faced second-degree murder charges for using a firearm during a drug trafficking crime, while Baron Smith was charged with first-degree murder.
Further developments in the case led to the indictment of a fourth individual, 30-year-old Calvin Alexander, who also faced a charge of first-degree murder. Alexander was implicated in the double homicide and also faced additional charges related to drug distribution and conspiracy to commit murder for hire. The indictment alleged that the murders of Beard and Smith were carried out in furtherance of a drug trafficking conspiracy.
The case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Louisiana. Both Baron Smith and Calvin Alexander were held in federal custody without bond as they awaited trial, which was scheduled to begin in April 2016. The prosecution sought mandatory life sentences for both men, who faced the possibility of life imprisonment and substantial fines if convicted.
