A spray of bullets on a Thursday morning in the Hollygrove neighborhood of New Orleans brought a violent end to the life of 25-year-old Nathaniel Allen on March 18, 2010. Known to his friends and family as 'Nizzy,' Allen and another man, 37-year-old Corey Weaver of Kenner, were found fatally wounded on the ground in the 4200 block of Hollygrove Street near Pear Street.
Responding to a call of gunfire around 10:20 a.m., New Orleans police discovered the tragic scene.
The investigation into the double homicide led to the arrest of a teenager. In a subsequent court appearance, the young man entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity, launching a legal process to determine his mental state at the time of the killings and his culpability for the deaths of Allen and Weaver.
Nathaniel Allen, a father to Nathaniel Allen Jr. and Nataisa Allen, was the son of the late Nathaniel Miller and Carmen Franklin. His death left a void in his family, which included his brother Ronald Allen and several other siblings. His funeral was held at the Rhodes Chapel on Washington Avenue, and he was laid to rest in Resthaven Cemetery.
