Juan Carter, a 26-year-old African-American man, was shot and killed in New Orleans on July 7, 2011. On that Thursday, Carter was traveling with his mother to a court hearing where he was scheduled to face a double murder charge from a 2010 incident. As they were on their way, a black truck pulled up alongside their vehicle, and an occupant opened fire, striking and killing Carter.
The brazen daylight shooting was investigated by the New Orleans Police Department.
Their investigation led them to a suspect, Bokio Johnson. It was discovered that Johnson was the father of one of the victims in the 2010 double murder case for which Carter was heading to court. This connection pointed to a motive of retaliation for his son's death.
Bokio Johnson was subsequently arrested and charged with the murder of Juan Carter. His arrest brought a resolution to the case, which authorities now consider solved. The incident highlighted a tragic cycle of violence, as Carter himself was on his way to answer for murder charges when he was killed in an apparent act of vengeance. Johnson faced his own murder charge for the death of Carter.
