In the quiet town of DeRidder, Louisiana, the life of 29-year-old Lawrence Daniel Chavez, a Hispanic male, came to a tragic end on the night of January 29, 2014. A decorated veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, Chavez had served his country as a Health Care Specialist in the U.S. Army for seven and a half years before transitioning to the Army Reserves.
His death, however, would not come on a foreign battlefield, but in his own home, in a confrontation with those sworn to protect.
The evening's tragic events began to unfold around 11 p.m. with a pair of distressing 911 calls. The first was from a concerned family member, reporting that Chavez was suicidal. A second call quickly followed, reporting a gunshot fired in the yard of the Wilson Street residence. Responding to the urgent calls were three officers from the DeRidder Police Department and a Louisiana State Trooper. Upon their arrival, they encountered Chavez at the front door, but their instructions for him to step outside were met with refusal as he closed the door on them.
Given the grave nature of the 911 calls, the officers made the decision to enter the home. Inside, a DeRidder police officer located Chavez in a bedroom, armed with a handgun. The officer issued loud verbal commands for Chavez to drop his weapon. According to police accounts, Chavez did not comply and instead pointed the firearm at himself and pulled the trigger, but the weapon did not discharge. As he reportedly cycled another round into the firearm, the officer, fearing for their own safety, fired a single shot, striking Chavez in the chest. Simultaneously, authorities stated, Chavez turned his weapon on himself and fired.
Lawrence Chavez was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations was called in to handle the officer-involved shooting investigation. In the end, no charges were filed against the officer who fired their weapon. No other suspects were sought, and no arrests were made in connection with the incident that left a family grieving and a community searching for answers.
