In the summer of 2015, a tragedy unfolded in the small community of Effie, Louisiana, near Marksville, forever marking the life of 7-year-old Madeleine Recktenwald. On the evening of July 8th, Madeleine, a young female, was with her father, 28-year-old Ryan Recktenwald, at a friend's home where they had been staying. Friends of the family would later report that Ryan had been battling depression over personal matters.
That evening, concern grew when Ryan and Madeleine left the residence without a word.
The quiet evening was shattered by the sound of gunshots near the home. This prompted a frantic search by their concerned friends. Their worst fears were realized when they discovered the bodies of both father and daughter in a field behind the house. The Avoyelles Parish Sheriff's Office was immediately contacted, and deputies arrived at the scene around 8:50 p.m.
The investigation determined that Ryan Recktenwald used a 9mm semi-automatic pistol to shoot his daughter three times before turning the weapon on himself, firing a single shot into his chest. Both Madeleine and her father were pronounced dead at the scene by the Avoyelles Parish Coroner. The case was classified as a murder-suicide, with Ryan Recktenwald identified as the sole suspect in his daughter's death. As the perpetrator died at the scene, there were no arrests to be made in connection with this devastating event.
