In a tragic turn of events on a late Friday night in June, a young man's life was cut short in his own home in Bossier City, Louisiana. Jeremy Davis, a 25-year-old male, was shot and killed on June 24, 2016, following a heated argument that escalated to fatal violence. The incident unfolded at a residence on Shirley Lane, where Davis lived with his mother and her longtime boyfriend, Jeffery Sanchez Smith.
The dispute, which reportedly began over a case of bottled water, quickly spiraled
out of control. Smith, who considered Davis his stepson, claimed that he acted in defense of Davis's mother, alleging that Davis had attacked her. However, a different and more harrowing account emerged from a key witness: Davis's own brother. He testified that the argument was verbal and that Smith pursued Jeremy through the house, ultimately shooting him as he tried to escape to safety in his brother's room. After the shooting, Smith fled the residence, and the murder weapon was never recovered by law enforcement.
Responding to the incident at approximately 10:30 p.m., Bossier City Police officers found Jeremy Davis with a gunshot wound to the chest; he was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect, Jeffery Sanchez Smith, was apprehended by officers a short time later at the intersection of Shirley and Birdwell Lane. Smith, who was 45 years old at the time of his conviction, was initially charged with second-degree murder.
During the trial, the jury was presented with the conflicting narratives of the night's events. Ultimately, they returned a unanimous verdict, finding Smith guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter. The court also heard about a history of domestic abuse involving Smith.
