In the summer of 2016, the life of 17-year-old Roderick 'RJ' Davis Jr., an African American male from Houma, Louisiana, was tragically cut short. On the night of July 11th, Davis went to Scott Lane Park with three other individuals. An argument broke out, leading to gunfire that resulted in Davis sustaining multiple gunshot wounds. His body was discovered in the park around 5 a.m.
the following morning, July 12, 2016.
The investigation into the shooting led to the arrest of 18-year-old Kentrell Gaither Jr., who turned himself in to the authorities. During questioning, Gaither provided details about the incident that only someone present at the scene would know, such as the location, the calibers of the guns used, and the direction the suspects fled. Initially, Gaither implicated two other individuals, Zamante Alvis and Denzel Brown, as the shooters.
However, as the investigation progressed, evidence suggested that Gaither had falsely positioned himself as a non-shooter in the incident. This led to the charges against Denzel Brown being dropped. A warrant was then issued for Gaither's arrest in connection with Davis's death. After a period of being on the run, Gaither was apprehended in Houma in early May 2018 and was charged with second-degree murder, to which he pleaded not guilty.
The legal proceedings took a significant turn on January 22, 2021, when Kentrell Gaither Jr. entered into a plea agreement with prosecutors. He pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter. As a result of the plea deal, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison. While prosecutors and investigators believed Gaither was the actual shooter, the complexities of the case and the risks associated with a trial led to the acceptance of the plea agreement. No further charges were brought against any other potential suspects in the death of Roderick Davis Jr.
