In the quiet community of Gray, Louisiana, the life of 24-year-old Alvin George III was abruptly ended by an act of violence. On the evening of October 7, 2016, a shooting incident on Mahler Street resulted in George's death and left another man injured, shattering the calm of the neighborhood and leaving a family to grapple with a devastating loss.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect, Jeremiah Lee Williams, who was 21 years old at the time.
The Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office identified Williams as the alleged gunman and issued a warrant for his arrest on charges of second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder. The motive for the shooting was believed to be an ongoing dispute between Williams and the injured victim.
A sense of unease lingered in the community as the search for Williams began. However, the manhunt came to a peaceful conclusion four days later when Williams, accompanied by his mother, turned himself in to the authorities at the Terrebonne Parish jail. In September 2018, a jury found Williams guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter in George's death and guilty of attempted second-degree murder for the injury of the other man. For his crimes, Williams was sentenced to a total of 60 years in prison, bringing a close to a tragic chapter for the family of Alvin George III and the community of Gray.
