The coroner's report revealed that Michael Nickelotte Jr. died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was last seen by his roommate when he left their house around 1 a.m. on September 18, 2017, without his cell phone, wallet, or car keys. His family reported him missing the same day. His remains were discovered near Nicholson Drive, about 60 yards from the road.
