On the evening of November 27, 2017, in Springhill, Louisiana, 17-year-old Jaylen Thomas, a male, was tragically shot and killed. The fatal incident occurred in the parking lot of the Harrison Chapel Baptist Church. An autopsy would later reveal that Thomas had been shot eight times, primarily on the left side of his body.
The investigation into the shooting determined that the wounds were inflicted from two different. 45 caliber weapons.
The nature of the wounds to his upper arm, flank, back, and thigh suggested that he was likely running away or already on the ground when he was shot. The bullets caused extensive damage to his lungs, liver, spleen, and gastrointestinal tract, leading to significant internal bleeding. Any of the shots that entered his body cavity were considered potentially fatal. A toxicology report indicated that there were no drugs or alcohol in his system at the time of his death. At the scene, law enforcement recovered fourteen shell casings and two unfired rounds, along with a cell phone found near Thomas's shoulder.
Court proceedings followed the investigation, leading to the conviction of at least one individual in connection with the murder of Jaylen Thomas. An appeal was later filed by the convicted party, challenging the admissibility of a statement made to law enforcement. However, the conviction and sentence were ultimately affirmed.
