In February of 2018, a 20-year-old woman named Raegan Elizabeth Day and her friend, 28-year-old Dustin Hartline, vanished after leaving their Pearl River, Louisiana home. The two were last seen on February 15, on their way to a relative's house in Kenner. When all communication from them ceased, their disappearance immediately triggered suspicions of foul play, prompting a significant law enforcement investigation. The search for the missing friends ended in tragedy nearly three weeks later when a dive team discovered Day's 2011 Chevrolet Camaro submerged at the East Pearl River Boat Launch, close to the Mississippi state line. Inside the vehicle, authorities found the bodies of Day and Hartline.
The subsequent investigation revealed a sinister plot that led to the deaths of the two friends. It was determined that Day had been lured to a remote, wooded area near a Slidell subdivision under the guise of selling her Camaro. She had arranged to meet with Brittney 'Beezy' Savell, an acquaintance, about the potential sale. However, the meeting was a setup for a carjacking. When Day and Hartline arrived, they were ambushed by masked assailants. In what was described as a 'carjacking gone bad,' both were shot and killed. An autopsy later confirmed that Day had been shot in the front and back of the head, while Hartline was found in the trunk with a single gunshot wound to the back of his head. Due to the significant time they had been submerged, the bodies were identified through distinctive tattoos.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly led to the arrests of four individuals. Authorities took into custody 18-year-old Jason Landry, 25-year-old Brittney 'Beezy' Savell, 22-year-old Derrion Lemoine, and 27-year-old Steven 'Stevie' Oliveieri. The group faced a range of serious charges. Landry and Oliveieri were indicted for the first-degree murder of Raegan Elizabeth Day, while Landry was also charged with the first-degree murder of Dustin Hartline. Savell and Lemoine were indicted on charges of second-degree murder for both deaths. The indictments also included counts of conspiracy to commit armed robbery with a firearm and aggravated kidnapping.
In March of 2023, Jason David Landry, then 23, pleaded guilty to two counts of manslaughter, two counts of second-degree kidnapping, and two counts of conspiracy to commit armed robbery with a firearm. As a result of his plea agreement, he was sentenced to 80 years in prison for his role in the brutal slayings. The St. Tammany Parish District Attorney's office stated that the heinous nature of the crimes warranted the most serious consequences and that Landry's sentencing was a step toward ensuring justice for the victims and their families.
