In the pre-dawn hours of August 30, 2018, the life of 18-year-old Vontashia Bell, a Black/African American female, was tragically cut short on the streets of Shreveport, Louisiana. Responding to the sound of gunshots in the Cedar Grove neighborhood, police discovered Bell around 4:30 a.m. suffering from gunshot wounds to her upper body. She was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival.
Her death was later ruled a homicide.
The initial aftermath of Bell's death was marked by confusion and a lack of information, with early media reports and law enforcement misgendering and using her former name. It was through the efforts of organizations like Louisiana Trans Advocates that her correct name and gender were brought to public light.
