In the late afternoon of September 8, 2018, a violent encounter in the 7000 block of Melon Court in Baton Rouge tragically cut short the life of 25-year-old Jyrish Turner. Turner, a male resident of Chippewa Street, was engaged in a conversation with another man when they were approached by an individual with the intent to rob them. The situation escalated, and gunfire erupted, leaving Turner with a fatal gunshot wound.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The shooting also resulted in injuries to the 28-year-old man who was with Turner. Despite being struck by gunfire, the second victim managed to drive away from the scene and was later found in the 7100 block of Greenwell Springs Road. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment and was reported to be in stable condition.
Investigators quickly began to piece together the events of that day, and their work led them to a suspect. Two days after the shooting, on September 10, 2018, the Baton Rouge Police Department arrested 28-year-old Calvin Ricks Jr. in connection with Turner's death. Authorities stated their belief that the shooting was the result of a narcotics transaction that had gone wrong.
Following his arrest, Ricks was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. He faced a series of serious charges, including First Degree Murder, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Possession with Intent to Distribute Marijuana, Possession with Intent to Distribute Heroin, and Possession of a Firearm with a Controlled Dangerous Substance. The investigation into the shooting remained ongoing as authorities continued to gather evidence and details surrounding the deadly incident.
