In the quiet community of Violet, Louisiana, the life of 17-year-old Deshaun Singleton was tragically cut short on a Monday evening. Just before 9 p.m., the sound of gunshots pierced the night in the area of Daniel and Stacie Drives, prompting deputies on patrol to investigate. What they discovered was a somber scene: a vehicle had crashed into an electrical pole in the 3000 block of Daniel Drive.
Inside, in the driver's seat, they found Deshaun, a male, with a single, fatal gunshot wound to his head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the young man's death quickly pointed to two individuals. The St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office identified 27-year-old Jeff Shields and 19-year-old Dwestley Rodriguez Ratcliff Jr. as the primary suspects in the shooting. In a swift move, law enforcement located and arrested Shields, booking him on the serious charge of second-degree murder. At the time of his arrest, he was held on an $850,000 bond. While one suspect was in custody, the search for the second began, with the sheriff's office issuing an arrest warrant for Ratcliff, also for second-degree murder.
