In the quiet community of Avondale, Louisiana, a domestic dispute escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of 54-year-old Louvenia Penwright on Monday, September 28, 2020. That evening, neighbors reported a man beating a woman, and the sounds of gunshots pierced the night air, prompting a call to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office.
When three deputies arrived at the scene near Grambling Court and Butler Drive, they found Ms.
Penwright and her boyfriend, 57-year-old Willie Shropshire Jr., engaged in a heated argument in the street. In a horrifying turn of events, the deputies witnessed Shropshire produce a revolver, place it to Ms. Penwright's neck, and fatally shoot her.
The deputies on the scene immediately returned fire, killing Shropshire. Both he and Ms. Penwright were pronounced dead at the scene. Sheriff Joe Lopinto later stated that deputies had been called to the couple's home for domestic disturbances in the past. Ms. Penwright and Shropshire were an unmarried couple and had one adult child who was not present during the incident.
Louvenia Penwright was a former bus driver for the Jefferson Parish School Board and a graduate of L.W. Higgins High School and Delgado Community College. She was an active member of her church and a mother to two sons.
