A 16 year old lifeguard is abducted from her workplace and is murdered In the summer of 2000, sixteen-year-old Caucasian Molly Anne Bish was working as a lifeguard at Comins Pond in her hometown of Warren, Massachusetts. On the morning of June 27th, her mother, Magi, dropped her off for her shift. It was only Molly's eighth day on the job. The day before, Magi had noticed a suspicious-looking man with a mustache sitting in a white car in the parking lot, seemingly observing the area.
On the 27th, that man was not there when Magi left her daughter by the lifeguard station. However, another witness reported seeing a man fitting that description just minutes before Molly arrived for her shift. Within a short time, Molly vanished, leaving behind her open first-aid kit, her sandals, and her whistle next to her lifeguard chair.
The disappearance of Molly Bish triggered the most extensive and expensive search for a missing person in the history of Massachusetts. For three years, her family and law enforcement desperately searched for answers. A break in the case came in the fall of 2002 when a hunter discovered a blue bathing suit, similar to the one Molly was wearing when she disappeared, in a wooded area on Whiskey Hill in the nearby town of Palmer. This discovery led to an intensive search of the area. On June 9, 2003, Molly's partial remains were found scattered in the woods, about five miles from her home. Due to the condition of her remains, an exact cause of death could not be determined, but her case was officially classified as a homicide.
Over the two decades that followed, the investigation into Molly Bish's murder has remained active, though no arrests have been made. Several individuals have been named as suspects or persons of interest. Early on, the focus was on the unidentified man in the white car that Molly's mother had seen. Later, in 2009, Rodney Stanger, a man convicted of murdering his girlfriend in Florida, came under suspicion. Stanger had lived near Warren for many years, hunted in the woods where Molly's body was found, and had access to a white car. Another individual, Gerald Battistoni, a convicted rapist who resembled a composite sketch of the mysterious man, was named as a suspect in 2011; he died in prison.
More recently, in 2021, law enforcement announced a new person of interest: Francis "Frank" P. Sumner Sr. Sumner, who died in 2016, was a convicted rapist and sex offender with a lengthy criminal record who operated an auto repair shop in the area. Investigators received new information that pointed them in his direction. Despite these developments and ongoing efforts, including advanced DNA testing of evidence, the case remains unsolved. The abduction and murder of Molly Bish continues to be a haunting cold case, leaving her family and community still waiting for justice.
