In the early morning hours of August 30, 2021, the quiet of Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, was broken by a grim discovery. The body of 42-year-old Nicole Ryree Hamilton, an African American woman from the neighboring city of Lafayette, was found outdoors on Mills Highway. Responding to a 911 call at approximately 3:25 a.m., deputies from the St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office arrived to find that Hamilton had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
Her death was immediately treated as a homicide, launching an intensive investigation into the circumstances that led to her tragic end.
For nearly three months, detectives worked to piece together the events of that late summer morning. Their efforts culminated on November 22, 2021, with the arrest of a suspect. Linus P. Shelvin, a 53-year-old man also from Lafayette, was taken into custody at a residence on 13th Street in his home city. Following his apprehension, Shelvin was booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center before being transferred to the St. Martin Parish Correctional Center.
