In the early hours of Labor Day, September 5, 2021, the life of 52-year-old Tonya Campbell, an African American woman and a veteran of the US Navy, was tragically cut short in her Ferriday, Louisiana home. Responding to a call of shots fired shortly after 1:30 a.m., officers from the Ferriday Police Department discovered Campbell with a single gunshot wound to her chest and a contusion on her head.
The investigation that followed, conducted by the Ferriday Police Department with
assistance from the Concordia Parish Sheriff's Office, determined that the fatal shooting was the result of a domestic dispute. The authorities swiftly identified Campbell's husband, 53-year-old Richard Martin, as the suspect in her death.
Richard Martin was subsequently apprehended and charged with second-degree murder in connection with his wife's homicide. He was booked into jail and held without bond. Later, Martin entered a guilty plea to the lesser charge of manslaughter. For his role in the death of Tonya Campbell, he was sentenced to 40 years in prison. The authorities confirmed that the incident was isolated and not related to any other recent homicides or gang activity in the area.
