In the heart of New Orleans, a tragedy unfolded on a Wednesday afternoon, abruptly ending the life of 19-year-old Zernell Lee. On October 6, 2021, Lee was diligently working alongside his colleagues from Groundwork New Orleans, a youth workforce training group. They were engaged in a project to install permeable pavers at the New Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church on Annunciation Street, a task aimed at improving the community's infrastructure. The ordinary workday turned into a scene of chaos and violence when gunmen in a gray Ford F-150 ambushed the work crew.
The brazen daylight attack resulted in a quadruple shooting that left the neighborhood shaken. Zernell Lee, a young man with a future in construction and landscaping, was fatally wounded. Another life lost in the tragic incident was that of his 25-year-old co-worker, Derrick Copelin. The sudden eruption of gunfire sent shockwaves through the community, as a project intended for civic betterment became the backdrop for a brutal act of violence. Several of the victims were reportedly armed with semi-automatic weapons at the time of the ambush.
The investigation into the double homicide led New Orleans police to 22-year-old Nairobi Davis. Authorities pieced together a case that they believed linked him to the shooting, suggesting the motive was an ongoing feud between rival groups from Algiers and the 10th Ward. Davis was subsequently arrested and booked on two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder. The basis of the case against him was largely circumstantial, partly built on the fact that he arrived at a West Bank hospital with a gunshot wound shortly after the shooting on Annunciation Street.
Despite the initial charges, the legal proceedings against Nairobi Davis took a different turn. His defense attorney presented evidence, including phone records, that contradicted the police's timeline and placed Davis in Algiers at the time of the shooting. Faced with this new information and acknowledging the weaknesses in their case, the Orleans Parish District Attorney's office made the decision to drop all charges against Davis in March of the following year, citing a lack of sufficient evidence to proceed with the prosecution. The murder of Zernell Lee officially remains unsolved.
