An 18-year-old female, Serena Williams, was tragically killed in a shooting on November 16, 2021, in Alexandria, Louisiana. The incident occurred at the Sanctuary at Alexandria Apartments on Lakeside Drive. According to Alexandria police, multiple shots were fired into the apartment unit where Williams was located. Also inside the apartment was Williams' sister, who survived the attack.
The suspect in the shooting was identified as Germon Jefferson.
Jefferson shared a child with Williams' sister. Following the shooting at the apartment complex, Jefferson reportedly drove to Riverbend Drive and attempted to shoot the brother of the two women, but he was not injured. Jefferson then led police on a chase but managed to escape, and he was arrested two days later in Dallas.
Initially, Jefferson was charged with second-degree murder and two counts of illegal use of a weapon. As his trial was about to begin with opening statements, after a jury had been selected, Jefferson decided to accept a plea deal. The offer allowed him to plead guilty to the lesser charge of attempted second-degree murder and guilty to the illegal use of a weapons charges. The sentences for these charges are to run consecutively, totaling 75 years.
