Jestin 'Boogie' Kinard, a 19-year-old male, was killed on April 14, 2022, in New Orleans. On that Thursday evening at approximately 9:45 p.m., officers from the New Orleans Police Department's Fourth District were dispatched to the 3700 block of Mansfield Avenue in Algiers following reports of gunfire. Upon their arrival, they discovered a male victim who had sustained at least one gunshot wound.
Emergency medical services transported Kinard to a local hospital for treatment, but he
ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. Four days later, on April 18, 2022, the Orleans Parish Coroner's Office formally identified the victim as Jestin Kinard and officially ruled his cause of death as a homicide by gunshot wound.
Known as a sweet and introverted soul, Kinard had graduated from Andy DeKaney High School in Spring, Texas, and was employed as a Longshoreman at the Port of New Orleans. Despite his time in Texas, he loved his hometown of New Orleans and was eager to return after finishing his education. He was often found enjoying the city's second line parades on Sundays with his cousins.
As the homicide investigation progressed, detectives with the NOPD were able to identify a suspect in connection with the fatal shooting. An arrest warrant was issued for one count of second-degree murder. The suspect, who was a juvenile at the time of the incident, was located in police custody in Pearl River County, Mississippi. On January 11, 2023, the then 18-year-old male was extradited back to Orleans Parish to face the murder charge. Due to his age at the time of the offense, his name has not been publicly released.
