In the warm evening of August 14, 2022, the vibrant city of New Orleans was pierced by an act of violence that claimed the life of a young woman. Derrah Nelson, a 24-year-old Black female, was fatally shot near the intersection of Canal and North Derbigny streets. When police responded to the scene, they found her unresponsive.
The incident, which unfolded shortly before 5 p.m., also left a man and a dog injured.
The man was discovered a short distance away at Tulane Avenue and North Claiborne. The New Orleans Police Department quickly launched a homicide investigation into the shooting, committing to unravel the circumstances that led to the tragic event.
Derrah, known affectionately to her loved ones, was remembered as a bright and promising individual. The investigation into her death remains active as authorities continue to seek information from the public to help bring those responsible to justice. To date, no arrests or suspects have been publicly identified in connection with her murder.
