Demetrius Thomas was a 33-year-old Black man when his life ended on August 24, 2022, in New Orleans, after a midday call sent officers to the 2800 block of Comus Court. Inside a building, police found him down with multiple gunshot wounds; paramedics arrived, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. In the first hours after the shooting, the city’s homicide investigators folded his death into a violent stretch that also saw other killings investigated across New Orleans that day, a grim
reminder of how quickly one neighborhood tragedy can be swallowed by a wider wave.
Five days later, the Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office officially identified the victim as Demetrius Thomas and determined he died from gunshot-wound injuries. As detectives worked the case, the story began to sharpen into something more specific than “a man shot in the afternoon”: investigators said they developed information that led them to a single alleged perpetrator, turning a scene that initially offered only urgency and unanswered questions into an accusation with a name attached.
On September 12, 2022, police announced the arrest of Elbert Bender in connection with Thomas’s killing, saying homicide detectives had positively identified him as the perpetrator and obtained a warrant accusing him of one count of second-degree murder. By the time that warrant was secured, Bender was already being held at the Orleans Parish Justice Center on unrelated charges, and authorities said he was rebooked so the homicide charge could follow him into the jail intake system as well.
Beyond that arrest and the charge, public updates from police focused on the investigative posture rather than a courtroom outcome: the case, as described by authorities, had moved from an unidentified shooter to a named suspect held to answer for second-degree murder.
