Village Marshal Patrick Crowley, a 36-year-old male, was shot and killed on June 13, 1909, in Hodgkins, Illinois. Crowley had recently joined the Hodgkins Police Department and was escorting the ex-mayor, Modesto Lenzi, to jail after arresting him for causing a disturbance. As they were walking, Lenzi's son, Harry, stepped out from behind a tree and shot Crowley in the back of the head. This ambush resulted in Crowley's immediate death.
