On April 9, 1977, 22-year-old Mark Dale Cavaness, a white male, was found dead from a shotgun wound on his family's farm near Harrisburg, Illinois, in the region known as Little Egypt. His body was discovered by his younger brother, Sean, then 15 years old. The initial investigation yielded little progress, and the coroner's jury ruled the death as either accidental or homicidal, but no definitive conclusion was reached. At that time, no arrests were made, and the case remained unresolved.
