On December 8, 1978, in Millstadt, Illinois, 78-year-old Frieda Sophia Mueller, a white female, was tragically murdered during a home invasion. The assailants fatally shot her before stealing her television set, billfold, and checkbook.
This homicide was part of a series of violent crimes attributed to Girvies L. Davis and Richard Holman, who were linked to multiple robberies and murders throughout Illinois during the late 1970s.
Notably, on December 22, 1978, they murdered 89-year-old Charles Edward Biebel, a wheelchair user, in his trailer home, stealing various items including watches and firearms. On May 12, 1979, they killed 84-year-old John George Oertel in his trailer, and on July 13, 1979, they executed 83-year-old Esther Sophia Wendler Sepmeyer, a blind woman, during a robbery. Their crime spree culminated on August 30, 1979, when they attempted a robbery at an auto parts store, resulting in the death of 21-year-old Frank Cash.
Davis and Holman were arrested following the botched robbery at the auto parts store. Davis sustained a gunshot wound during the incident and was apprehended after seeking medical attention. Holman was arrested a few weeks later. They were subsequently convicted of multiple murders and other crimes. Davis received death sentences for his involvement, while Holman, being under 18 at the time of the crimes, was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole.
While Davis and Holman were linked to Frieda Mueller's murder, they were never formally tried for her death. Her case was among several that were mentioned during their trials but did not result in separate prosecutions, as authorities focused on securing convictions for the other murders they committed.
