On September 16, 1995, Patrolman James "Jimmy" Michael O'Connor, aged 27, was tragically killed in the line of duty. O'Connor, a 15-month veteran of the Chicago Police Department, was off-duty and seated in his car outside El Jardin restaurant at 3335 North Clark Street when he witnessed a robbery. A woman's purse was snatched by two men who fled the scene in a Toyota Corolla. O'Connor pursued the vehicle and attempted to block its path with his own car.
