Dell Otis Fountain, a 40-year-old African American male, was a police officer with the Chicago Police Department. He tragically lost his life on March 22, 1996, in Chicago, Illinois. Officer Fountain was a dedicated member of the force, having served for nearly three years. The incident leading to his death occurred in his apartment building located at 3934 West Van Buren Street.
On the evening of March 22, 1996, Officer Fountain's 16-year-old son, Dell Woodard, attempted to enter their
apartment building but was harassed and denied entry by Tajuan Murray, a 27-year-old African American male who was a guest of an upstairs tenant. Murray, an ex-convict on parole and awaiting trial for murder, had previously harassed Woodard. In an earlier incident, another guest of the same tenant had confronted Woodard with a rifle, leading Officer Fountain to notify the police, resulting in the man's arrest and the seizure of the weapon.
Upon learning of the harassment, Officer Fountain exited his apartment with his weapon to confront Murray. As Murray headed upstairs, Officer Fountain followed. A struggle ensued between the two men, during which Murray attempted to disarm Officer Fountain. In the struggle, the gun discharged, and Officer Fountain was shot in the upper right leg, severing a major artery. Despite being rushed to Cook County Hospital, Officer Fountain succumbed to severe blood loss and was pronounced dead later that evening.
Tajuan Murray was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. He was initially convicted and sentenced to life in prison. However, his conviction was overturned in 2001, and a new trial was ordered. Despite the legal battles, the tragic loss of Officer Fountain left a profound impact on his family, colleagues, and the community he served. He was survived by his son, daughter, parents, and seven siblings. Officer Fountain's funeral was held at Salem Baptist Church, and he was laid to rest in Goshen Cemetery in Belzoni, Mississippi.
