Michael Anthony Ceriale, a 26-year-old white male, was a dedicated officer with the Chicago Police Department. On August 15, 1998, while conducting an undercover narcotics surveillance operation near the Robert Taylor Homes at 4101 South Federal Street, he was tragically shot. Officer Ceriale and his partner, Patrolman Joseph Ferenzi, were monitoring the activities of Gangster Disciple gang members, including Jonathan Tolliver, Willie Hunter, George Alexander, and Robert Brandt.
During the operation, Brandt noticed the officers and alerted Hunter and Tolliver. The two gang members, armed and ready, ran out of the building, with Tolliver firing the fatal shot that struck Officer Ceriale in the abdomen, just below his bulletproof vest. Despite undergoing five surgeries and receiving over 200 pints of blood, Officer Ceriale succumbed to his injuries on August 21, 1998, at Cook County Hospital.

As part of the agreement, prosecutors dismissed the drug and weapons charges against him, and he was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Willie Hunter, aged 25, and George Alexander, aged 21, both pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and received 30-year prison sentences each. Jonathan Tolliver, aged 19, stood trial, but the jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict, resulting in a hung jury.
