On September 27, 2012, Karl Allen, then 20 years old, was charged with first-degree murder in connection with Jovany's death. According to authorities, Allen pulled up in a vehicle, got out, and opened fire on Jovany and his cousin. Allen was arrested by the Chicago Police Fugitive Apprehension Team and was identified in a lineup by a witness who saw him running from the scene. Bond was denied for Allen following his arrest.
