On October 24, 2008, Darnell Donerson, a 57-year-old African American woman, was tragically murdered in her Chicago home. She was the mother of Academy Award-winning actress and singer Jennifer Hudson. On that fateful day, Darnell and her son, 29-year-old Jason Hudson, were found shot to death inside Darnell's residence in the Englewood neighborhood. The discovery was made by Darnell's daughter, Julia Hudson, upon returning home from work. Additionally, Julia's 7-year-old son, Julian King, was reported missing, prompting an AMBER Alert. Tragically, Julian's body was found three days later in the backseat of a parked SUV on Chicago's West Side; he had suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
The primary suspect in these heinous crimes was William Balfour, the 27-year-old estranged husband of Julia Hudson. Balfour, also an African American, had a criminal history, having served nearly seven years in prison for attempted murder, vehicular hijacking, and possession of a stolen vehicle. He was on parole at the time of the murders. Investigations revealed that Balfour had a history of threatening the Hudson family, allegedly expressing jealousy and anger over Julia's relationships. On the morning of the murders, Balfour reportedly became enraged upon seeing a gift of balloons that Julia had received, believing they were from a new boyfriend. This incident is believed to have triggered the subsequent violence.
Following the murders, Balfour was taken into custody and charged with three counts of first-degree murder and one count of home invasion. During the trial, evidence was presented that Balfour had attempted to secure a false alibi and that his cell phone records placed him near the crime scenes at the relevant times. Witnesses also testified about his prior threats against the Hudson family. Despite his plea of not guilty, Balfour was convicted in May 2012 on all charges. He was subsequently sentenced to three consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole, plus an additional 120 years for other related charges.
