On a cold February evening in 2012, the life of a young African-American man, Mohamed Hassan, was tragically cut short. The 21-year-old male was in Blackstone Square in Boston's South End on Sunday, February 19, when violence erupted. At approximately 9:30 p.m., the sound of four gunshots pierced the night, sending people in the park running for cover. When the chaos subsided, Hassan was found suffering from a gunshot wound to the face.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to his longtime girlfriend, Hassan had been "just drinking, chillin'" in the park before the fatal encounter. Friends remembered him as a "peacemaker" and "everybody's friend," insisting that he was not a fighter. Hassan, who was also known by the names "Hum Greazy" or "Humz," was a hip-hop artist who lived in the nearby Villa Victoria development. The Boston Police Department responded to a call for a person shot at 419 Shawmut Avenue and later identified the victim as Mohamed Hassan. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined his death to be a homicide.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, police stated that the killing did not appear to be a random act. However, despite the investigation conducted by the Boston Police Homicide Unit, no arrests have been made in the case. There has been no public identification of any suspect or suspects involved in the murder of Mohamed Hassan. His death is listed as one of the unsolved homicides of 2012 by the Boston Police Department, leaving a case that remains open and a family still waiting for answers.
