Joel Bentley, a 30-year-old man from Chicago, IL, tragically lost his life on July 5, 2014. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning, around 1 a.m., in the parking lot of a Walgreens located in the 6200 block of South Austin Avenue. Bentley, who was of Caucasian ethnicity, was discovered with a gunshot wound to his abdomen. Despite being rushed to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The circumstances surrounding Bentley's death were both tragic and avoidable. He had been attending a Fourth of July party in the Clearing neighborhood of Chicago with friends, including Richard L. Magnan, a 35-year-old man from Evergreen Park. Both Bentley and Magnan were members of the 2-6ers street gang. After the party, the group decided to walk over to the Walgreens parking lot. It was here that Magnan retrieved a handgun from his truck and began waving it around, showing it off to his friends, including Bentley. Despite being urged to put the gun away, Magnan continued to brandish the weapon. Tragically, the gun discharged, and the bullet struck Bentley in the abdomen, leading to his fatal injury.
Following the incident, Richard L. Magnan was identified by witnesses as the person who fired the fatal shot. He was subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree murder. During the investigation, Magnan confessed to the shooting in a videotaped statement, admitting that he had been waving the gun around when it accidentally went off. Magnan's criminal history revealed a pattern of violent behavior, including a previous conviction for attempted murder in 2003 and unlawful use of a firearm by a felon in 2004.
In court, Magnan pled guilty to being an armed habitual criminal and involuntary manslaughter in connection with Joel Bentley's death. Cook County Criminal Court Judge Matthew Coghlan sentenced Magnan to 11 years in prison for his role in the incident. The case highlighted the dangers of reckless behavior with firearms and the devastating impact it can have on individuals and their families.
