On July 18, 2014, 16-year-old Kajaunce Morton, an African American male, was inside a restaurant in Chicago's Grand Boulevard neighborhood when he attempted to flee from an assailant but was shot in the head. He succumbed to his injuries the following day.

Following the incident, authorities identified 18-year-old Denzel Lewis as the primary suspect. Prosecutors alleged that Lewis fatally shot Kajaunce Morton, leading to his arrest. He was subsequently ordered to be held without bond.
