Nathaniel was pronounced dead at 2:52 p.m. at Franciscan St. Margaret Medical Center in Dyer, Indiana. The incident also resulted in injuries to three other individuals, all in their late teens and early 20s.
The altercation that led to the shooting involved two groups of young men. During the confrontation, one of the individuals pulled out a handgun and began firing, resulting in several dozen shots being fired. Nathaniel Burns Jr. was found at the scene with gunshot wounds, along with two other young men who sustained minor injuries. A fourth victim was later transported to the hospital by a friend.
The Sauk Village Police Department, along with the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force, launched an investigation into the shooting. The authorities identified a 2000 black 4-door Pontiac with Illinois license plate #V128344 as a vehicle of interest, believed to be driven by a woman with a male passenger. The shooting was captured on camera, which provided crucial evidence for the investigation. Initial reports suggested that the shooting might have been an act of retaliation from a previous incident.
Nathaniel's family described him as an innocent victim of gun violence. His mother, too distraught to speak on camera, pleaded for anyone with information to come forward. The community, shocked by the violence, expressed their concerns about the safety of their neighborhood. Despite the ongoing investigation, no arrests or suspects have been publicly reported, and the case remains unresolved.
