Torrance Dortch, a 39-year-old African American man from Chicago, IL, was tragically shot and killed on January 25, 2016. He was shot in the stomach around 4:40 p.m. in the London Town neighborhood on the Far South Side of Chicago, in the same block where he lived. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, but despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at 5:56 p.m.

During the altercation, Rogers pulled out a gun and shot Dortch in the abdomen. Dortch managed to call the police and identify Rogers as his attacker before losing consciousness. Rogers was arrested nearly six months later and charged with first-degree murder. He was held without bail and faced a potential life sentence if convicted.
