Christopher Fields, a 17-year-old African American male, was tragically killed in a drive-by shooting on June 11, 2016, in the Back of the Yards neighborhood of Chicago, IL. Fields, a sophomore at Urban Prep Englewood Campus, was shot in the back and later succumbed to his injuries at Stroger Hospital. The incident also resulted in injuries to a 19-year-old man who was with Fields at the time.
The investigation into Fields' murder led to the arrest and conviction of Deonte Davis.
Davis was sentenced to 30 years for first-degree murder, 15 years for aggravated battery with a firearm, and five years for attempted armed robbery. The case took a tragic turn when Fields' pregnant cousin, Treja Kelley, who had testified against Davis, was also murdered. Kelley, an 18-year-old African American female, was gunned down in September 2019, just three months after her testimony.
Kelley's murder was linked to Kavarian Rogers, who allegedly received $5,000 to kill her. Rogers is currently awaiting trial for the murder. The Fields family has endured immense grief, losing multiple family members to gun violence. The community continues to mourn the loss of Christopher Fields and his cousin, Treja Kelley, as they seek justice and healing.
