Latrell McMahon, an 18-year-old African American male, was tragically killed on June 17, 2016, in Chicago, Illinois. The incident occurred in the early hours of June 18, 2016, in the 3400 block of West Madison Street in Chicago. McMahon was fatally shot inside a minivan during an altercation with his 17-year-old cousin, Keshawn Freeman. The altercation began when Freeman, who did not initially see McMahon in the minivan, made a threatening comment about him.
When McMahon responded, Freeman approached the van, punched McMahon in the face, and subsequently pulled out a semi-automatic handgun, firing multiple shots into the van. McMahon was struck once in the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Freeman was charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of his cousin, Latrell McMahon. He was also charged with aggravated battery with a firearm for shooting another cousin, a 16-year-old male, who was struck in the shin and later treated at Mount Sinai Hospital. The driver of the minivan, along with other passengers, witnessed the shooting and identified Freeman as the shooter. Freeman was held in lieu of $200,000 bail.
The case against Freeman was built on the testimonies of the witnesses inside the van, as well as the surviving cousin who was also shot. Freeman attempted to claim self-defense, but the evidence and witness statements contradicted his account. The tragic incident highlighted the ongoing issue of gun violence in Chicago and the devastating impact it has on families and communities.
