The group had been driving around and stopped near West Monaville Road and West Old Monaville Road in unincorporated Lake Villa.
Graham and Gonzalez exited the vehicle and began firing a sawed-off shotgun into the air in celebration. When they returned to the car, Gonzalez, who was sitting in the back seat, accidentally discharged the shotgun, striking Graham in the head. Graham was immediately driven to Northwestern Medicine Grayslake Outpatient Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Joey Gonzalez was subsequently arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and possession of a sawed-off shotgun. Additionally, he faced charges for not having a Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card. During the investigation, it was revealed that Gonzalez was also a person of interest in a residential burglary that occurred in October 2016 in Ingleside, Illinois. This connection was established through additional facts uncovered during the investigation into Graham's death.
In court, Gonzalez pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and was sentenced to four and a half years in prison. The judge emphasized the need for Gonzalez to use this experience as a learning opportunity to improve his life in the future.
