Rodolfo Rocha Jr., a 34-year-old Hispanic male from Aurora, Illinois, tragically lost his life on June 10, 2017. Rocha was spending time with friends and family outside a home on Grove Street when he was approached by Martin Garcia Jr., 25, and Anthony C. Medina, 26, both members of a local gang. The confrontation escalated when Garcia and Medina asked Rocha and his companions about their gang affiliation. Upon learning that Rocha and his friends were not affiliated with any gang, Garcia and Medina drew their guns and opened fire, fatally shooting Rocha. Several shots were fired at Rocha's car during the incident.
The investigation into Rocha's murder led to the arrest and subsequent conviction of both Garcia and Medina. Martin Garcia Jr. was found guilty of first-degree murder, armed violence, and unlawful possession of a firearm by a street gang member. He was sentenced to 75 years in prison. Anthony Medina, who was also involved in the shooting and had a history of gang activity and prior felony gun convictions, was sentenced to 80 years in prison. Medina's sentence included 35 years for first-degree murder, a mandatory 25-year enhancement for discharging the firearm that killed Rocha, 20 years for armed violence, and 10 years for aggravated battery.
The convictions of Garcia and Medina brought some measure of justice and peace to Rocha's family and the community. Kane County State's Attorney Joe McMahon expressed satisfaction with the jury's verdict, emphasizing that gang members who engage in violent acts will be held accountable.
