On July 25, 2014, 26-year-old Olatag Filimoni was fatally shot while sitting with friends outside a residence in the 3200 block of Baltic Avenue in Long Beach, California. The shooting occurred around 11:00 p.m. when a vehicle drove by, and an occupant opened fire, striking Filimoni in the torso. He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition but ultimately succumbed to his injuries on July 28, 2014.
The investigation revealed that Filimoni was not affiliated with any gangs, and the motive behind the shooting remained unclear. The assailants fled the scene, and initial efforts to gather information yielded no immediate leads or suspect descriptions.
Later in November 2014, Long Beach police arrested two suspects, Ricardo Gonzalez and Carlos Alexis Escalante, in connection with a series of shootings in the area, although their direct involvement in the Filimoni case was not confirmed publicly. The suspects were involved in other gang-related shootings, leading to multiple charges, including murder and attempted murder, gang enhancements, and weapons violations. These arrests highlighted the challenges faced by local law enforcement in tackling violence in North Long Beach, which had seen multiple incidents tied to gang activity during that period.
