On a Tuesday evening in Salisbury, Maryland, the routine of collecting rent payments turned into a tragic and fatal encounter for William R. Elliott. The 70-year-old, white male and his wife had just returned to their home on Airport Road on March 20, 2001. As they pulled into the garage, they were ambushed by assailants. In the ensuing attack, his wife was accosted, and the rent money they had collected was stolen.
