Christopher Sean John Michaels, a five-year-old boy from Dixon, Illinois, tragically lost his life on September 18, 2017. Christopher, who was a kindergartner at St. Anne’s Catholic School, was described as a loving child who enjoyed playing video games like Minecraft and Roblox, and spending time with his family.
The circumstances surrounding Christopher's death were harrowing. On the afternoon of September 18, 2017, the Dixon Police Department responded to reports of gunshots at a residence on Fargo Avenue. Upon arrival, officers found the door to a second-floor bedroom barricaded. Inside, they discovered the body of Christopher Michaels, who had died from a gunshot wound to the head. Also in the room was his father, 33-year-old Robert Michaels, who had also suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was still breathing but unresponsive. A semi-automatic handgun was found next to his hand.
The investigation revealed that Robert Michaels had been under scrutiny for allegations of child sexual abuse since September 12, 2017. The reported victim was not Christopher, but due to these allegations, the Department of Children and Family Services had implemented a safety plan that prohibited Robert from having unsupervised contact with his son. Despite this, Christopher's mother brought him to his father's house on the day of the incident. Robert asked Christopher to go upstairs to play a video game and then asked the child's mother to retrieve something for him. As soon as she stepped away, Robert barricaded himself and Christopher in the room. Moments later, two gunshots were heard.
The tragic event was classified as a murder-suicide. Robert Michaels, who was transported to a hospital but later pronounced dead, had taken his own life after killing his son. The Dixon Police Department, along with the Illinois State Police Crime Scene Investigation Unit, conducted a thorough investigation into the incident. The community of Dixon was left in shock and mourning over the loss of young Christopher.
