On October 14, 2022, 14-year-old Eric Casique was fatally shot in an apartment located in the 500 block of Piper Lane in Prospect Heights, Illinois. At approximately 3:15 p.m., emergency services were summoned to the scene, where they found Eric with a gunshot wound to the chest. Despite immediate medical attention, he was pronounced dead at 3:47 p.m. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office later ruled his death a homicide. Investigations revealed that Eric had been socializing with three other juveniles and a 19-year-old man in the apartment. Initially, the juveniles claimed that the 19-year-old had accidentally shot Eric. However, upon further questioning, the 19-year-old admitted to fleeing the scene out of fear but denied being the shooter. Subsequent interviews with the juveniles uncovered that they had been passing around an unloaded .380 caliber pistol, taking turns "dry firing" it. At some point, one of the juveniles inserted a loaded magazine and chambered a round. Believing the gun was unloaded, another juvenile pointed it at Eric and pulled the trigger, resulting in the fatal shot. Eric was an eighth-grade student at Lake Cook Young Adult Academy, known for his academic excellence and playful, happy demeanor. He had aspirations of excelling in school, graduating, and playing soccer and basketball. He played for the soccer team 'Leones' for three years and enjoyed every moment. He was remembered as a helpful individual who loved video games, music, and his cat, Luna. His family, including his parents Heriberto Casique and Irania Torres, and siblings Yessica Reynoso, Estephanie Reynoso, and Esmeralda Casique, mourned his untimely passing.
