On January 11, 2018, 33-year-old Uriah Hughes, a male from Chicago, IL, was tragically killed in a shooting incident in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side of Chicago. Around 11:30 a.m., Hughes and a 26-year-old man were getting into a vehicle in the 5300 block of West Race Avenue when they were suddenly fired upon. Hughes sustained a gunshot wound to his body and was immediately transported to Stroger Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The younger man, who was also shot, was taken to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park with a gunshot wound to his back and later transferred to Stroger Hospital in critical condition.
The investigation into Uriah Hughes' death revealed that he was a victim of a targeted attack. The case remained unsolved for several years, with no immediate arrests made following the incident. However, in a significant development, a federal racketeering indictment was unsealed in November 2021, charging 13 members of the Wicked Town faction of the Traveling Vice Lords street gang. This indictment accused several gang members of being involved in numerous violent crimes, including the murder of Uriah Hughes. Specifically, Darius Murphy, Demond Brown, Willie Gardley, and David Arrington were charged with Hughes' murder as part of their efforts to maintain and increase their rank within the gang.
The indictment detailed how the gang operated primarily in the Austin neighborhood, using violence and intimidation to protect their drug-dealing operations. The gang members were accused of committing multiple murders, attempted murders, armed robberies, and assaults over several years. The charges against them included not only the murder of Uriah Hughes but also other violent acts aimed at rival gang members and individuals perceived as threats to their criminal enterprise.
