Darius Moorman, a 21-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on March 16, 2018, in Chicago, Illinois. The incident occurred during a gun sale that went awry in the West Pullman neighborhood. On March 15, a 24-year-old friend of Moorman arranged the sale of a gun with Darion Simmons, 24, through Facebook Messenger. They agreed to meet the next day in the 12300 block of South Lowe Avenue.
On the day of the incident, Moorman drove to the meet-up spot with his friend.
Simmons got into the backseat of the car, and Moorman's friend handed him $500. Simmons then exited the vehicle and returned moments later with Justin Thomas, 19. Both men re-entered the backseat and pointed guns at Moorman and his friend, warning them not to move. When the men in the front of the car moved, Simmons fired, striking Moorman in the shoulder. Simmons fled the scene while the other three men remained in the car.
Moorman attempted to drive away but crashed a block later. Paramedics transported him to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 5:26 p.m. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed his death. Moorman's friend was able to identify both Simmons and Thomas, leading to their arrests.
Darion Simmons, who lived a few blocks from the shooting location, was taken into custody on a warrant when he went to meet his parole officer at the Markham Courthouse. Justin Thomas was arrested on April 18 in Chicago Heights. Both men were charged with first-degree murder and denied bail. They were held at the Cook County Jail, with Thomas scheduled to appear in court on the charges and Simmons set to appear on June 4.
The case highlights the dangers of illegal gun sales and the tragic consequences that can result from such transactions. The loss of Darius Moorman, a young African American man, underscores the need for stricter gun control measures and better community safety initiatives to prevent similar incidents in the future.
