Nakia Bailey, a 21-year-old African American woman, tragically lost her life on May 2, 2018, in Chicago, IL. Nakia was one of five individuals shot in a drive-by shooting in the Homan Square neighborhood. The incident occurred around 9:45 PM near Grenshaw and St. Louis. Nakia, a young mother, was struck multiple times by bullets fired from a silver car.
She sustained gunshot wounds to her ribs, shoulder, and back, and was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries. The other victims, four young men aged between 15 and 19, survived the attack despite being shot multiple times.

Smith, a member of the Traveling Vice Lords street gang, was accused of opening fire on the group of five people, resulting in Nakia's death. He faced one count of first-degree murder and four counts of attempted murder. The investigation revealed that Smith and another individual had driven to the scene and fired at least 11 shots from both sides of their vehicle. Surveillance footage and witness testimonies played a crucial role in identifying Smith as one of the shooters.
Smith's arrest brought some measure of justice to Nakia's grieving family and friends, who had been devastated by her untimely death. The community held candlelight vigils and released balloons in her memory, calling for an end to the senseless violence that had claimed yet another innocent life.
